In this article we will examine the recently published funding amounts for vocational learners (VET an FE) participating in the Turing Scheme, and give examples of actual budgets. In a nutshell, Turing funding consists of 3 different funding sections (sections A-C in this article) for all participants.
Organisational support (typically £315 GBP per participant) see section A for details.
Travel costs (this will depend on the distance travelled, see section B for details) typically around £250-325 GBP for most European projects.
Living costs, depending on the destination; typically, between £80-109 GBP per day (see section C for details).
Additional funds are granted for participants from disadvantaged backgrounds and SEND (see section D for details).
Section A: Organisational Support
Organisational support funding covers the costs of Turing project management, such as all the administration involved when implementing a placement. For the first 100 participants, organisational funding is £315 GBP per participant. For any further participants, organisational funding is £180 GBP.
For a typical first-time project of a small to medium sized application of 50 participants, you will receive £315 GBP x 50 = £15,750 GBP (organisational funding).
For a larger application of 200 participants, you will receive £315 GBP x 100 = £31,500 GBP as well as £180 GBP x 100 = £18,000 GBP, a total of £49,500 GBP of organisational funding.
Section B: Travel Costs
Travel costs are paid for getting to and from the destination and cover flights, coach and train rides. Different amounts are awarded depending on the distance travelled between home and the Turing destination:
Most common distances in Europe are:
100 to 499km: £165 GBP
500 to 1,999km: £250 GBP
2,000 to 2,999km: £325 GBP
3,000 to 3,999km: £480 GBP
Most common overseas destination distances are:
4,000 to 7,999km: £745 GBP
8,000 to 11,999km: £905 GBP
12,000km+: £1,360 GBP
For travelling to Berlin from the UK you would receive £250 GBP in Turing travel support.
For travelling to Australia from the UK mainland you would receive £1,360 GBP in Turing travel support.
Section C: Living Costs
Funding for living costs will depend on the living costs at the destination. Each destination has been split into one of 3 categories (Group 1 = high cost of living; Group 2 = medium cost of living; Group 3 = low cost of living):
Budget for group 1 destinations: £109 GBP per day for the first 14 days, £76 GBP per day after the 14th day.
Budget for group 2 destinations: £94 GBP per day for the first 14 days, £66 GBP per day after the 14th day.
Budget for group 3 destinations: £80 GBP per day for the first 14 days, £56 GBP per day after the 14th day.
Example Turing Living Cost Calculation For Countries In Group 1 (High Cost of Living):
The US is a popular group 1 destination. Other typical group 1 destinations include Australia, Canada, New Zealand or Switzerland. For a participant staying 30 days in the US, Turing support for living costs would be calculated as follows:
£109 GBP x for the first 14 days = £1,526 GBP.
£76 GBP x for an additional 16 days = £1,216 GBP
£1,526 GBP + £1,216 GBP = £2,742 GBP.
The Turing support for living costs in the US for 30 days would be: £2,742 GBP.
Example Turing Living Cost Calculation For Countries In Group 2 (Medium Cost of Living):
Spain is a popular group 2 destination. Other typical group 2 destinations include most of Western Europe such as Germany, Austria, France, Italy and many more. For a participant staying 30 days in Spain, Turing support for living costs would be calculated as follows:
£94 GBP x for the first 14 days = £1,316 GBP.
£66 GBP x for an additional 16 days = £1,056 GBP.
£1,316 GBP + £1,056 GBP = £2,372 GBP.
The Turing support for living costs for countries in group 2 for 30 days would be: £2,372 GBP.
Example Turing Living Cost Calculation For Countries In Group 3 (Low Cost of Living):
Fiji is a popular group 3 destination. Other typical group 3 destinations include the Maldives, South Africa, Argentina or Morocco and many others. For a participant staying 30 days in a group 3 destination, Turing support for living costs would be calculated as follows:
£80 GBP x for the first 14 days = £1,120 GBP.
£56 GBP x for an additional 16 days = £896 GBP.
£1,120 GBP + £896 GBP = £2,016 GBP.
The Turing support for living costs for countries in group 3 (low cost of living) for 30 days would be: £2,016 GBP.
Expert Tip: Most western nations are in group 1 and 2, but often living costs differ depending on which city you are planning to send your participants. If you avoid big centres and tourist destinations (for example by organising your mobility in smaller cities) you will be able to get more bang for your buck!
Interestingly Cuba has been put in group 1 – so you will have a great budget to do amazing things, where living costs are generally low. Talk to us if you want to start a Turing project in Cuba or if you would like to discuss any of the other destinations.
Section D: Additional Support For SEND and Participants From Disadvantaged Backgrounds
All costs for SEND participants will be covered. This even includes travel costs for a required accompanying person. Participants from disadvantaged backgrounds will receive additional funding if actual travel costs are higher than the funding amounts granted in section B.
