Participating in a Turing Scheme placement gives students the remarkable opportunity to develop new skills, gain vital international experience and boosts their employability. They can also experience what it’s like to work in a professional capacity as well as gain a wide range of soft skills, and language skills. Participants build relationships with peers on an international level and gain fresh ideas and a better understanding of other cultures.
The Turing Trust
The life and work of Alan Turing left a rich legacy that continues to grow and develop. As part of that legacy, The Turing Scheme works closely with The Turing Trust, a charity founded by Alan Turing’s family that refurbishes IT equipment that’s donated to schools globally. This makes computers available to less privileged communities in sub-Saharan Africa and enables volunteers in the UK to improve their own IT skills by preparing computers for use in schools.
Typically, a donation of 20 PCs from The Turing Trust that are then reused in classrooms enables 360 students to learn vital IT skills and offsets six tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of planting 14 trees.
As reported by James Turing, the great nephew of Alan Turing and Founder and CEO of the Trust, “It’s fantastic to see how Alan Turing’s legacy continues to inspire, and now (further) through a new global focus with the Turing Scheme.”
This really helps to highlight how the digital revolution has brought much of the world closer together, yet there is still much to be done to bring the benefits of the digital revolution to some of the world’s poorest communities. This is another reason why The Turing Trust is focused on providing computers to schools. It has especially made great progress over the last few years in Malawi, increasing the proportion of schools now equipped with computers significantly.

The Turing Trust offers donors of IT equipment a free collection and accredited British HMG InfoSec Standard data destruction service. This can often save organisations high costs incurred compared to their existing waste management service.
More importantly, by reusing redundant IT equipment organisations can have vital social and environmental impact. The Trust welcomes any donations of computers and laptops which can run Windows 7, or Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, or above.
