How much does an Erasmus+ Internship mobility cost in Ireland?

During this challenging times in Covid many educators are thinking about how to get the most out of their Erasmus+ budget and have three things on their minds:

  • How to get the best out of my Erasmus+ budget

  • Who offers the best value for my Erasmus+ budget

  • How to find the most reliable Erasmus+ providers

Like many Erasmus+ project leaders you might find yourself lost and confused and probably don´t know where to start to find the best answers about about your Erasmus+ project. But wouldn´t it be nice to have somebody have done the homework for you?

At TravelEdventures we provide Erasmus+ mobilities and are specialized on internships and trainings for students and teachers across all Erasmus+ member countries. So we have a good idea of how much an Erasmus+ internship costs to organize.

In this article, we are going to break down an overview of prices for the different Erasmus+ mobility types to help you make your Erasmus+ mobility dreams come true. For this reason we have analyzed over 10.000 Erasmus+ mobilities in Europe.

Erasmus+ mobility type  Erasmus+ mobility cost in Ireland including accommodation & travel for 4 weeks
Erasmus+ internship (self organized, living with family/friends abroad for free) 500-1500 Euro
Erasmus+ internship (self organized, self organizing your accommodation e.g in a hostel) 1.000-3300 Euro
Erasmus+ internship organized by an agency 1200-3500 Euro

An Erasmus+ mobility (including the most common destinations in countries like Spain, the UK, Ireland and others) your Erasmus+ mobility cost should fall within the 500-3500 Euro price range, depending on your personal contacts and the amount of effort you are willing to put into organizing your trip. That´s quite a big range, so let´s check out the details and pros and cons of those packages.

How Much Does it Cost to Organise an Erasmus+ Internship By Yourself?

How much money do you need if you want to organise everything on your own? This is obviously the cheapest and probably one of the best options for those lucky few who have great connections in their desired visiting country. Maybe one of your relatives live abroad and you could stay in their guest room for a few weeks while using their industry contacts to find an appropriate internship for your field of education? If so, you will probably spend about 500 Euros on travel and will need around 500 Euros of additional pocket money during your stay. I’m sure your relatives or friends will show you around, so it´s definitely a great plus! You could use the extra money you receive from Erasmus+ for shopping and won’t need to rely on pocket money from your parents or relatives back home.

The only small negative is that you would be staying with friends or relatives and wouldn´t broaden your horizons as much as if you were out on your own, sharing a house with other likeminded people. Of course, you would really have to make sure you have your Erasmus+ documents filled out perfectly too.

How to lower the cost of your Erasmus+ mobility

  • Choose the shortest duration (2 weeks)

  • Choose to live with relatives or friends (if you are lucky enough to have them at your desired destination)

  • Ask friends and family to put you in touch with reliable host companies OR

  • Get in touch with possible Erasmus+ hosting companies directly and arrange the internship yourself

  • Keep in mind you must always have all Erasmus+ documents in order to make sure you receive the full funding amount required

  • If you book accommodation, choose to do your Erasmus+ internship outside of the main season, it will also mean you get to experience a more relaxed and authentic (less touristy) atmosphere at your destination.

How much does a self-organised Erasmus+ internship cost if you don’t have a free place to stay?

If you book your own accommodation, then the price of an Erasmus+ internship will increase significantly but don´t worry, the biggest part of Erasmus+ funding is dedicated to subsistence costs such as food and accommodation. Interestingly, if you don´t have free accommodation available, the costs will be almost the same as if you were organising the whole stay through an agency. Booking accommodation for your Erasmus+ stay can be tricky, and we recommend doing a lot of research before you commit to a specific accommodation prior to your stay. If you can, get someone to check out the accommodation before you arrive or at least make sure that there are enough trustworthy reviews relating to the accommodation so there are no bad surprises when you arrive.

Best tips on how to book your accommodation when on Erasmus+ internship:

Make sure you pick accommodation close to your Erasmus+ internship host company. Often, (especially in big cities) we have found that candidates underestimate the amount of time it takes to travel from accommodation to work. Remember you will have to commute twice a day to and from work, so shortening the commute will contribute hugely to free time you have to explore your Erasmus+ destination.

If you are looking to rent on AirBnB or similar website make sure that you choose something with positive reviews. Read the reviews so you know that you will be happy with your stay. Often AirBnB and several other local websites give you the option to rent “rooms only” which can be great value for money especially if you book for more than 1 month.

You can also check several social media groups relating to Erasmus+ accommodation or check with student halls which sometimes rent out rooms during the university holiday period as well. When booking hostels, make sure that yours is in a safe area and that your commute will be safe as well. So, as you can see there is a lot to consider when booking accommodation.

How much does it cost to organise an Erasmus+ internship through an agency?

You can also hire an agency to organise your Erasmus+ internship accommodation. There are even some organisations (such as us) out there that take the service to the next level and book the whole trip for you (including your flights and airport transfers, buying public transport tickets for you).

The main advantage when paying extra for an agency is peace of mind. They will have checked the accommodation for you and already use it on a regular basis. They know if the area is safe and they will also find your Erasmus+ internship for you and match the position as closely as possible to your needs. They work with the hosting organisations on a regular basis and can provide you with trusted and tested host organisations for your internship.

They will also sort out the Erasmus+ paperwork for you and make sure you are having a good time at your internship. Some agencies will even offer to change your Erasmus+ placement if you’re unhappy. Most agencies send you Erasmus+ documents if you happen to forget to fill them out by yourself. Trust us this happens a lot, our team leaders buy lots of stamps 😉

Another huge advantage is to know that your money isn´t lost if you need to cancel your Erasmus+ stay for Coronavirus reasons:

The costs for an average 4 weeks stay starts from about 1.200 Euros at the lower end and goes up to 3.200 Euro for a 4 weeks stay on the more exclusive side of the budget range. This all depends on your inclusions and whether you have any pre-booked activities included in your package.
